Tips

Read appropriate children's literature.

Read what you like.

Read ahead of time. Avoid surprises!

Bring more selections than you'll need, in case one doesn't work out.

Introduce the book before you begin reading. Point out the author, illustrator and dedication and any other books by the author, for example.

Explain any unusual vocabulary words ahead of time. Try not to interrupt the story.

Mix your selections, balancing serious and humorous, short and long fiction and non-fiction, poetry and fairy tales.

Don't be afraid to change books if you start one and it isn't engaging students.

"Don't overevaluate," cautions Esme Raji Codell, author of How to Get Your Child to Love Reading. "The more you formally test and check, the more you kill the affective gain."

Read aloud during practice and time yourself to make sure you fit well in the time the teacher has alotted for you. It's important not to run too short or too long.

Thank your audience for being good listeners.
