Welcome new and returning volunteers!

Choose an orientation session: Sept. 17, Oct. 15 or Nov. 19

Aug. 8, 2009 -- Anyone who wants to volunteer to help children develop a desire to read for fun is invited to any of six upcoming meetings of Read Aloud West Virginia.

Read Aloud recruits and places volunteer readers in classrooms and other settings. We will welcome new and returning vounteers from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 17, Oct. 15, Nov. 19, Jan. 21, Feb. 18 or March 18. The orientation sessions will be in the River Room at the Columbia Gas building in Charleston, 1700 MacCorkle Ave. SE.

Why should you come?

Read Aloud volunteers teach students by example that reading is fun. Children who enjoy reading tend to do it on their own. Children who practice reading on their own, whether graphic novels, sports magazines, biographies or classic literature, acquire greater vocabulary and knowledge and improve their own writing skills. They tend to do better in school and on achievement tests, to go further in school and to be more employable later.

Most Read Aloud volunteers spend less than an hour a week in the classroom, but often become a highlight in the children's school week. This kind of service is flexible enough that it is ideal for individuals, both working and retired, as well as book clubs, church groups and civic groups.

Orientation sessions give prospective volunteers clear instruction on the roles of the volunteer and school, insight into what makes an enjoyable Read Aloud experience for children, suggestions for getting started, and hopefully, some inspiration.

Registration is helpful but not required. People may register or find more information by calling (304) 345-5212 or by e-mailing readaloud@verizon.net.
