Donors supply books to children in shelters, mentoring program
Oct. 2, 2011 -- Congratulations to Children's Home Society of West Virginia for putting
books in the hands of children in emergency shelters and other programs
around the state.
For 10 years, Mercer County WE CAN, a mentoring program of Children's Home
Society, distributed thousands of books to children with help from First Book.
This year, they reached children in more locations:
-- In Parkersburg, the society coordinated a new, local advisory board and received $7,000 from the Department of Education in seed money.
-- In Northfork, Children's Home Society received a grant of $2,000 to buy 1,000 new books for children in emergency shelter care and children at the community center.
-- In Princeton, the organization received a grant of $1,680 to buy 840 new books for children in the WE CAN child-mentoring program.
-- In Morgantown, the organization received $320 to buy 160 new books for children in the tutoring/mentoring program.
Children in all circumstances need books, just as they need appropriate toys.
Access to books is one of the factors that affects whether children become proficient readers.
