Timeline
Fall 1986
Jim Trelease film shown at three different locations in the Kanawha Valley; following movie individuals asked to volunteer for RAWV. Note: To publicize the film, Read Aloud Handbooks were given to each elementary and most pre-schools in the county. Schools were also supplied with flyers to send to parents.
January 1987
Read Aloud West Virginia was incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
Spring 1987
Readers in the schools, Pre-natal and Books for Babies programs are started on a trial basis.
1987-1992
Kanawha county program grows, adds Food for Thought, Readers in the Community, Cover to Cover (Enrichment Program) and Author Week. Other counties request information to create similar programs. By the end of 1992, the program also exists in Cabell, Mercer, Jackson, Greenbrier and Monongalia counties and is beginning in Wood. The WV Education Fund (now the Education Alliance) expresses interest in “adopting” the program and expanding the program statewide.
1993
WV Education Fund receives a grant from the Benedum Foundation and is given the name Read Aloud WV by the Kanawha County group. Kanawha County becomes a chapter of the program administered by the WV Education Fund (The Education Alliance).
2000
The program exists in some capacity (perhaps one school) in 53 of the state’s 55 counties.
2006
The Education Alliance decides to eliminate the program and focus on research and advocacy rather than direct service programs. Only four counties are known to have active programs at this point.David Pitchford, Kanawha County Read Aloud Chairman plans a retreat for the purpose of long range planning. The group decides to request that the Education Alliance return the Read Aloud name and use of the logo.
2007
Read Aloud moves into office space at the Columbia Gas Building in Charleston and Board members seek to re-connect with other county programs. Jim Trelease returns to speak to the business community, the newsletter is re-started and a rudimentary web site is established.
2008
The Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation awards a grant in the amount of $200,000 for the purpose of re-establishing Read Aloud in 16 counties by the end of 2010 Mingo County becomes the first new county with a program. A new and improved website is established to connect county programs.
2009
program is started in Pocahontas county, programs are developed for Roane, Raleigh, Randolph and plans for similar programs are initiated in Berkeley, Jefferson, Upshur.
