West Virginians get Read Aloud
Dec. 17, 2009 -- Doddridge, Preston, Randolph and Upshur counties have joined the Read Aloud West Virginia family, while people from Clay, Greenbrier, Lewis and Summers counties have inquired about creating chapters in their areas.
They join Berkeley, Cabell, Kanawha, Mercer, Mingo, Monongalia, Pocahontas, Raleigh and Roane, bringing Read Aloud closer to its goal of active programs in 16 counties by the end of 2010.
Each program is different, said Director Mary Kay Bond. "Read Aloud is like a patchwork quilt. Each chapter is designed to meet the unique needs of that county. This is not a cookie cutter operation.
"All are in various stages of development. Some are in initial stages of organization, some are fledgling chapters and others are fully developed."
The state office provides assistance, but local volunteers are the key in determining the needs of their county and developing programs that fulfill those needs.
"We are very grateful to them for their hard work in carrying out this mission," Bond said.
